Root Canal Therapy
The inside of a tooth houses nerves and blood called the “pulp” found in the root. Infections can occur here, and a root canal is needed to clean out the infection.
Ignoring cavities or decay for too long can bring on a root infection. Sometimes a crack or fracture in the tooth can allow bacteria to seep in and cause infection as well. In either case, a root canal is performed to save the tooth by removing the infection with a special tool.
What Happens at an Appointment
At your root canal appointment, a local anesthetic will be administered to numb the affected area. After the infection is carefully removed, a filling will be bonded to the tooth to close the hole. A crown may be needed at an additional appointment. Sedation options are available.
